The Van Gilder Hotel on Fourth Avenue. This old building was built in the early 1900's. Seward, 96 miles from Soldotna, was a main point of commerce for early settlers on the Peninsula. Babies were born at the Seward Hospital. People sought the services of the dentist there. Hardware & building supplies were to be had there as well as food, clothing, & variety shops. It was often a two or three day stay in the port city. The docking of an Alaska Steamship, with railroad connections to Anchorage, was a year-round event.
