Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Redoubt Avenue, Soldotna 1960

Our lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Planner, builder, and first pastor (aided by Reverend Thadeus Dean and Robert T. Woodruff) was James Van Hommisen. Property was donated by homesteader Marvin Smith. First step in construction was extending Redoubt west from Binkely street to the church property. Father Van Hommisen recruited 5 or 6 experienced stone masons, born in Ireland and unemployed in Anchorage to construct the building. They selected the rocks from a quarry near Cooper Lake in Cooper Landing. Seen on the left is the parish rectory.
