Coastal Drilling Company at Swanson River oilfield, 1959

Coastal Drilling of Bakersfield, California was the first company to drill in the newly discovered Swanson River field, within the Kenai National Moose Range (now the Kenai Wildlife Refuge ). Over 3,000 miles north from home base was quite a shocker for these "roughnecks". Sterling was hardly a wide spot in the road while Soldotna was not much more. Soldotna had a bare essential grocery store.
