Fisherman are lined up to buy tickets for the Silver Salmon Derby, which takes place the second week in August. This was a contest to catch the largest and smallest salmon in Resurrection Bay. Large cash, day and overall prizes are offered. One fish is specially tagged with a coveted prize of at least $10,000. Huge crowds are attracted to this mere event. Most of these salmon start life in Silver Salmon Lake, a short distance from town which is stocked, so naturally they return.
