First natural gas hookup in Alaska at the Karsten Family home with Betty Karsten and Ed Back, Soldotna 1961
This was a monumental day in Soldotna. Natural gas from the Kalifornsky Field was to fuel furnaces, cooking ranges, hot water heaters, etc. Customers were quick to replace wood and oil units in their homes and businesses. The main line from the field as it journeyed to Anchorage passed between Parker's Cafe and the Emmett Karsten home. Seen here is Betty Karsten watching Ed Back and another gas company employee install the meter ( right next to her front door!). This is a four part negative. One shows a forced air furnace and hot water heater. This home was built by Emmett, frame construction, shingle siding. Seen is a lawn, a garage, and a doormat. A very nice home in its day. The Karsten children are Kurt and Keith.
