KBC GED Testing Process

Frequently Asked Questions about GED Testing

How does the GED testing process work?

  • Step 1: Call us at (907) 235-1602 to set up your pre-GED assessment (TABE).
    • There is no charge for TABE testing. It's important to take a TABE test to assess your skills. Students with high enough TABE scores can take the official GED practice test (GEDReady). Those with lower scores can attend free KBC classes or receive individualized instruction.
  • Step 2: Take the GED practice tests
    • There are four separate practice tests (GED Ready) that can be taken online: math, language arts, science and social studies. They cost $6 each. Students who are enrolled in the KBC program can take the practice tests for free. Your score report and study plan can be printed and presented to a GED facilitator at KBC for advising. Computer and calculator skills are required to take these practice tests.
  • Step 3: Determine if you are ready for the Official GED Test.
    • Ready? When you have GEDReady scores over 145 each, you are ready to take the official exams. The tests require up to seven hours of testing that can be completed over multiple days. Schedule your test with the KBC GED Examiner at 235-1601. For official testing, bring a non-expired, government issued, photo ID with your signature and a secondary ID with your name and signature (or your social security number printed on an official document). In order to pass the exam, you must receive a score of 145 or better.
    • Not ready? Take free classes at KBC or get connected with a tutor and prepare yourself for this important exam! All you have to purchase is the GED calculator if needed for studying. Classes run September through April. Stop by Bayview Hall and pick up a class schedule today. Visit us any time during the academic year!

Who's eligible to take the GED test?

The GED test may be taken by any adult over 18 who is not currently enrolled in a high school program. Individuals between 16 and 18 may take the test series but must present written documentation that includes the following:

  • Proof that they have withdrawn from school (withdrawal slip, transcript, or a letter from the counselor).
  • Proof that they have a parent or guardian's permission to take the test series; they can provide a letter from a parent or proof of independent living, such as a marriage license, wage receipts, rent receipts, military papers, etc.).

Individuals under 16 years of age cannot take the GED test series and must be enrolled in some type of approved school program (Alaska Statute).

When and where is the test given?

  • GED tests are given by appointment. You will complete the test series over several testing sessions. Call 235-1601 to schedule GED tests.
  • Official GED tests are given at the Kachemak Bay Campus’ Bayview Hall which is located at the corner of Pioneer Avenue and Heath Street in Homer.

What does it cost and how do I sign up?

  • The cost is $36 for each section of the test, $144 total. Test cost is free for students enrolled in an Alaska Adult Education Program.
  • Contact Michelle at 235-1602 mid-August through April to enroll in the AAE program for classes or other assistance.

What are the testing conditions?

Tests are administered on the computer, though they are not online. The GED can be taken at an official GED testing center. (KBC is an official testing site.) Practice tests are available online. Tests can also be taken at home in monitored conditions with an online proctor. Visit ged.com for more information.

All test materials will be provided for you. You may not use any reference materials in the test room except those provided by the examiner. You may not start a test and finish it at a later date. If you need to leave the test room before the test is completed, that test will be invalid and you will need to start again with another test version. You may take the test subjects in any order.

What score do I need to get to pass? How do I see my scores?

  • Students must pass each section with score of 145 or better.
  • Your scores will be available on your myGED portal at www.ged.com.

Will KBC help me prepare for the test?

  • KBC AAE provides free classes and tutoring to help you prepare for the GED test. Classes are held four days a week, Monday through Thursday.

Contact Michelle at (907) 235-1602 mid-August through April to enroll in classes.

Are there special accommodations available?

  • Spanish and Braille versions of the test are available by special request. Students with verifiable learning disabilities may request special accommodations to complete the tests.
  • Find for more information about GED testing special accommodations.

Where can I learn more about the test and take practice tests?

  • Go to myGED.com to sign up. When you create your account, be sure to write down your username, password, and email address. You will need these when you take your official exams.
  • At this site, you can take a free tutorial that will help you understand how the computer based test works.
  • A calculator tutorial is available.
  • You can also take FREE practice tests. This is half the length of the official tests, but it will give you a feel for the type of questions that are asked.
  • Finally, you can take official practice tests for $6 each. However, if you register for the GED program at KBC, you will be able to take those practice tests for free. Call KBC for more information: (907) 235-7743 or (907) 235-1602.

Will I receive a certificate?

After passing all your official GED exams you will receive a digital copy of your diploma and transcript. You may order one free copy of your diploma.

When is GED graduation?

Each May, KBC holds a commencement ceremony to recognize students who have earned degrees and other certificates or completed programs on campus. If you would like to participate in this graduation ceremony, please let us know. You will receive invitations to send to family and friends to attend the ceremony and the reception afterwards.
