The Karsten family were early settlers in Soldotna. They bought some small acreage from homesteader Loren Stewart on the Kenai Spur Highway about mile 1.7. They built what was then a large two story frame house. Emmett was self-employed for the most part and a fine mechanic. He maintained the large diesel generator with which Homer Electric supplied a small number of Soldotna customers before any main line reached Soldotna. Emmett was one of the total of five boats on the Kenai River. One might say he was the first guide out of Soldotn, and he would find a customer at the Bear Den once in a while. Betty was an avid homemaker, and she and their children still live on the Kenai Peninsula.
