"Once Upon the Kenai" by Mary W. Ford tells us Joe was a Polish immigrant. He ventured through New York, Detroit, Prince Rupert, Anchorage and Valdez before settling in Kenai in 1917. He bought 9 acres on the bluff from the Bureau of Land Management. He built a dock, a pool hall, a bar and a roadhouse. The bar exists today with the same name. The building was used as a dance hall, roller rink, and 16mm movies were shown and other community activities took place there. A night at the roadhouse was $2.00, and breakfast was $2.50. Further info is found on pages 65 and 66 of "Once Upon the Kenai".
