Small Scale Irrigation

On Thursday, July 10, at 5:30 PM, Kachemak Bay Campus in Homer will offer a FREE class in garden maintenance. Do you struggle to keep up with hand-watering your garden? Do you have a limited water source? Do you want to save both time and water on your garden? Did you know that there are easy methods to accomplish all this while minimizing pests and diseases? Join Carey Restino of Homer Hilltop Farm, and Monica Kopp of Tilted Hill Farm, to learn all about efficient irrigation methods and get your hands on a working drip irrigation system at the KBC Grows High Tunnel! Class begins in Bayview Hall room 102 and moves to the KBC high tunnel across the parking lot.  Offered in partnership with Homer Soil and Water Conservation District. All About Pests: Slugs & Insects

On Thursday, July 17, at 5:30 PM, Kachemak Bay Campus in Homer will offer a FREE class in garden maintenance. Casey Matney of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will talk about some of the most common pests in Alaska gardens - slugs, root maggots, and other insect pests. We'll go over their life cycles, how to spot their signs in the garden, and methods to control them. See signs in person and learn how to set yourself up for success this season or in the future through effective, organic methods. Class begins in Bayview Hall room 102 and moves to the KBC high tunnel across the parking lot. Offered in partnership with Homer Soil and Water Conservation District. All About Plant Diseases, Pathogens, and Nutrient Deficiencies

On Thursday, July 24, at 5:30 PM, Kachemak Bay Campus in Homer will offer a FREE class in garden maintenance. Casey Matney of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will go over common plant diseases, pathogens, and nutrient deficiencies. Learn what to look for and how to address problems as they arise, and we may see some signs in the KBC Grows high tunnel! Hands-on Soil Health

On Thursday, July 10, at 5:30 PM, Kachemak Bay Campus in Homer will offer a FREE class in garden maintenance. Join Monica Kopp and Victoria Monsaint-Queeney of Homer Soil & Water to get down and dirty while learning key soil health principles. We'll run tests to see how to tell if soil is healthy or not, and learn what management practices can improve your garden soil. We'll also get up close and personal with beneficial soil organisms and learn about the soil food web. Bring a small sample of your own soil to test how healthy it is! Class begins in Bayview Hall room 102 and moves to the KBC high tunnel across the parking lot. Offered in partnership with Homer Soil and Water Conservation District. Geology of Kachemak Bay by Kayak

On Saturday, August 2, beginning at 8:00 am, Ph.D. Geologist (and KPC faculty) Taz Tally will lead a community class field trip by Kayak along Kachemak Bay to reveal its unique geological history, including active faults, pillow lavas, glaciation, mountain building, and evidence that the rocks of Homer were once near the equator! We may also be visited by otters and seals, who are very much at home along the shoreline. Round-trip water taxi and kayak rental included.
