Union Oil gas well, Kenai 1959

Photo shows Union Oil Company's gas well during a recent test. The well is located on the Kenai Peninsula and is producing commercial quantities of gas. Union Oil Company bid $4,021,031 on offshore lands. $1,616,246 was bid for the Kalifornsky beach area 10 miles south of Kenai. Confirmation of bids received at 15:00 hours (3:00 PM), 11 December 1959. This is the first photograph taken of the gas well and released for publication. This was a surprise to Union and a couple of employees were knocked off the rig when gas was hit. This well allowed Soldotna to be the first community in Alaska to be served with natural gas. Today at about mile 10 on Kalifornsky Beach road supportive buildings can be seen.
