The confluence of Russian River and Kenai River has proved to be the most popular salmon fishing spot in south central Alaska. Since the Sterling Highway connected this area to Anchorage in 1951, the number of fisherman has increased. Today, fishing in this area is referred to as "combat fishing".The salmon are returning to their spawning grounds in the Russian Lakes area, and the fishermen are waiting.
