Dick Gerhart homestead cabin, Soldotna 1949

Dick Gerhart's cabin was built in a spruce thicket just east of the Spur Highway, mile one. Dick had seen Anchorage while serving in WWII army service. His is a saddle and notched form of log building. His efforts were halted by winter at which time he moved to Longmere lake to spend the winter with other single homesteaders, Lyle Edgington, Virgil Dahler, and Bob Murray. It was finished the second summer. Gerhart tells of packing a G.I. Gas can down to the community spring at the mouth of Soldotna creek. Water was such a valuable necessity, he made the five gallons last a week! His cabin can be seen as one of the buildings at the Homestead Museum in Soldotna.
