Dick Gerhart with big earth mover, Soldotna 1949

Dick Gerhart is pictured here when he was an Alaska Road commission employee. Equipment here is a big earth mover, an Euclid. Dick soon married a woman from his home-state of Arizona who had no desire to live in Alaska. Her name was Mary, hence the street named Marydale. His homestead turned into a mine. Gravel is still being excavated for local road construction.
