Mullen family, Soldotna 1953

The Frank Mullen homestead was 100 acres along the river, bisected by Soldotna Creek and overlapping the Sterling Highway at the Y. Marge and Frank Mullen arrived in Anchorage from Chicago in 1945. Homesteading on the central Kenai Peninsula opened in mid 1947. Without a road on the peninsula and with a requirement to "set foot on the land and establish the corners"" they got off the Alaska Railroad at Moose Pass and hiked west to Soldotna and made their selection. The cabin was 14x16 stockade style. The Mullens raised four children, all born at Providence Hospital
